Bill

–

Bloomington, Illinois

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William "Bill" Johnston, 77, of
Bloomington, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Bill was born at St. Vincent's Orphanage in Chicago on July 8, 1945. He was lovingly adopted
by Ralph and Helen (Callahan) Johnston. He married Linda Stephens, on January 18, 1969. It
was love at first sight. She survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Jennifer (John) Kinsella of California; three grandchildren,
Mackenzie, Fiona, and Alana; one sister, Kathleen (Donald) Brooks of Peotone; three
siblings-in-law, Duane (Jeri Nell) Stephens, Dennis (Pam) Stephens, Lori (Chuck) Power, and
Suzi Stephens. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-laws, Raymond and Luella
(Waibel) Stephens; one brother-in-law, James Stephens; one nephew, Justin Stephens.

Bill lived a remarkable life, filled with love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to his
family and community. His departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will
remain in our hearts forever.

Bill was humble and selfless. His greatest joy came from his family, and he cherished his role as
a husband, father, and grandfather above all else. He consistently demonstrated his
unconditional love, guidance, and support, ensuring that each person in his life felt valued and
protected.

Professionally, Bill was an accomplished entrepreneur. He founded his own construction
company, Johnston Contractors, which he grew into a thriving business. His dedication,
expertise, and impeccable workmanship earned him respect and admiration. His passion for
construction and attention to detail are evident in every project he undertook.

In his leisure time, Bill found comfort in the beauty of nature. The outdoors was his happy place,
where he pursued his love for skiing, golfing, fishing, and hunting. He eagerly anticipated his
trips with the guys, where they would explore the wilderness and create lasting memories. His
eyes would light up as he recounted these memories, his passion for time spent outdoors
shining through every story.

In his younger years, Bill selflessly served his country as a proud Vietnam veteran. His time in
the Army instilled in him a sense of duty, honor, and camaraderie that he carried with him
throughout every aspect of his life. He often spoke with pride about his service and the
sacrifices made by his fellow servicemen. His patriotism and commitment to his country were
unwavering, and he remained a pillar of strength and resilience.

Bill leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and integrity that will forever inspire those who
were fortunate enough to know him. He touched the lives of many, and his absence will be
deeply felt.

Rest in peace, you will be dearly missed, but your legacy will live on in the hearts of those
whose lives you touched.

His visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday June 7, 2023, at Holy Trinity
Church of Bloomington. A funeral mass will follow at 12:00 p.m.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the
