Wes Johnson Jr.

–

Bloomington, Illinois

Wesley “Wes” Johnson Jr., 80, of Bloomington, IL, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Wes was born on December 5, 1944, in Springfield, MO, to Wesley Sr. and Martha Johnson. He graduated from Greenwood Laboratory School and went on to earn B.S., B.A., and MBA degrees from the University of Arkansas.

A proud veteran, Wes served as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army for three years. During his service in Da Nang, Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery and dedication.

Wes was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 50 years, Rachel, who passed away just four months earlier.

A man of unwavering faith and quiet strength, Wes was a longtime member of Eastview Christian Church. His life was rooted in service, and he found both joy and purpose within his church community. He faithfully led small groups, volunteered at the food pantry, and lived out his beliefs with humility and love.

Wes worked at State Farm for over 30 years, where he met Rachel, who was also working at the corporate headquarters at the time. Their love was an anchor to all who knew them.

He is survived by his two children, Wes (Melinda) Johnson of Normal, IL, and Sarah (Sam) Mahisekar of Wheaton, IL; and by his sister, Judy Johnson-Russell of Pittsburg, TX. Wes was a devoted grandfather to eight grandchildren, each of whom brought him deep pride and joy: Liliana (19), Wesley IV (17), Ravi (15), Alina (14), Seth (12), Laurel (10), Selah (10), and Josie (9). He took an active role in their lives — cheering from the stands, having meaningful conversations about life and faith, and always encouraging their hopes and dreams.

Wes had a true servant’s heart. He was the kind of man who showed up — snowblower in hand, Bible under his arm, or simply ready to help. From caring for his grandchildren to mentoring friends and leading Bible study at Heritage Manor, he gave freely of his time, wisdom, and steady, reassuring presence.

A funeral service celebrating Wes’s life will be held 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 17, at Eastview Christian Church, 1500 N. Airport Road, Normal, IL. Rev. Gary York will be officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the end of the service at the church by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 2:00 PM-3:00 PM Thursday at the church.
