Thomas D. Oakes Obituary (1930

Thomas D. Oakes, 86, of Pontiac, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at 4:20 p.m. at Evenglow Lodge Tjardes Health Center in Pontiac. His service will be held Friday, April 14, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Pontiac with Reverend James O. Wolfe III officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. Visitation will be Friday, April 14, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church. Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home, Pontiac, is in charge of arrangements. Thomas was born July 16, 1930 in Wataga, IL to Thomas and Millie (Shane) Oakes. He married June Tibbs on June 1, 1970 in Pontiac, IL. She passed away March 13, 2017. He is survived by his children, Daniel (Judy) Oakes, Timothy (Nancy) Oakes, Cynthia (Chris) Derrow, and Cheryl (Allan) Schumann, all of Missouri; step-children, Marsha L. (Keith) Fuller of Dickinson, TX and Sue A. (Barry) Schell of Pontiac, IL; sister, Nancy (Walt) Campbell of Galesburg, IL; sister-in-law, Janet Oakes of Florida; son-in-law, Steve Walters of Pontiac, IL; 22 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June; two sisters, Rita Oakes and Patty Sparks; one brother, Ernie Oakes; one son, Terry Oakes; one grandson, Ben Oakes; step-daughter, Dian Walters; and step-granddaughter, Kristin Walters. Thomas received a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Bradley University in Peoria. He served in the U. S. Army, 1st Cavalry, and served in Korea. He worked several different jobs after his service in the Army with the longest spent at Interlake in Pontiac. Thomas was a member of First Baptist Church in Pontiac, IL. He volunteered at the War Museum in Pontiac and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He raised Shar Pei dogs, canaries and finches.
