Stephen W. Thorpe

Stephen W. Thorpe, 74, of Decatur, IL passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Steve was born on June 27, 1951 in Bronxville, NY, the son of C. Walter Thorpe and Doris (Zelley) Thorpe. He served proudly in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in 1973. Steve earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from SUNY Maritime College in New York and his master’s degree in business management from the University of San Francisco. He married Carolyn Rennert on May 23, 1998. Steve retired as a vehicle emissions engineer from Illinois EPA after 27 years of service.
Steve was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He loved giving back to his community and was a 50 year volunteer for the American Red Cross, as well as various other organizations. Steve enjoyed traveling, cruises, science fiction and coin collecting. He started the TI computer club.
Steve is survived by his wife Carolyn Thorpe of Decatur, IL; children Elizabeth (Joe) Thorpe-Greenwald of Kansas City, MO, Cristina (Joe) Binnion of Decatur, IL, Jennifer (David) Smith of O’Fallon, MO and Matthew Thorpe of Decatur, IL; grandchildren Emily Binnion and Justin Smith; sister Mona Thorpe of Ridgefield, CT.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lynda (Pat) Morelli.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Calvert & Wikoff North Chapel with a 4:30 p.m. vigil prayer service. Steve will be laid to rest at Macon County Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Red Cross.
