Sarah Oberst

–

Bloomington, Illinois

Sarah Ann Oberst, 72, of Bloomington passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at her home with her family by her side. She was born on March 26, 1954, in Bloomington, to Daniel and Phyllis (Hancock) Gehrt. On July 14, 1973, she married Steven Oberst at Funks Grove. He preceded her in death in 2001.

Sarah is survived by 2 children: Elizabeth Jackson (Bloomington, IL) and David (Leah) Oberst (Glen Ellyn, IL), 2 sisters: Melissa Whittet (Granbury, TX) and Amy (Mark) McCown (Bloomington, IL), and 4 beautiful grandchildren.

Sarah was a 1972 graduate of Bloomington High School and later earned a B.A. in Social Work from Illinois State University. She then dedicated several years working at Chestnut Health Systems helping at-risk adolescents in the community.

She enjoyed playing pickleball with her friends and substitute teaching at Oakland Elementary School, where she again was committed to helping educate and mentor the next generation of Bloomington children.

Cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date this summer. She was a unique, one-of-a-kind gem, with a big heart, and will be truly missed by so many.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sarah’s name to Transitions Hospice, which the family cannot thank enough for its outstanding care and support during the last days of her life. Online condolences can be left at www.Calvertmemorial.com
