Robert M. Ponsonby
September 3, 1946 – February 24, 2025
Robert “Bob” M. Ponsonby, 78, of Bloomington, Illinois, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Martin Health Center in Bloomington, surrounded by love.
Born on September 3, 1946, in Chicago, Bob was the son of Dwight and Lillian Ponsonby and grew up in Brookfield, Illinois. On July 4, 2000, Bob married the love of his life, Renee’ Steffens, in Lincoln, Illinois. Their 31 years together were filled with adventure, laughter, and unwavering love.
A man of great intellect and curiosity, he pursued his passion for English Literature at Illinois State University, where he was also a member of the swim team. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, stationed aboard the USS Midway as an aircraft controller for several years. His service took him around the world, including time living in Naples, Italy—an experience that ignited his lifelong love for travel and cultural exploration.
Bob’s career in human resources and employee relations was distinguished by his skill as a compassionate leader and negotiator. He played a pivotal role in bringing Mitsubishi Motors (Diamond-Star Motors) to Bloomington/Normal in the late 1980’s while working for the State of Illinois Department of Labor. Later, he led employee relations at Mitsubishi before continuing his career at New United Motor Corporation (Toyota) in California. Bob’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements—he hired, mentored, guided, and helped shape the careers of thousands of employees over the years.
Bob’s life was rich with passion. He was an avid photographer, happiest with his Nikon camera in hand, capturing the beauty of nature and the essence of his travels. Throughout his life, Bob lived in Italy, Hong Kong, and five different states in the US. Bob was a devoted husband, cherishing nearly 25 years of marriage and 31 years of love and adventure with his wife, Renee'. He found joy in great food, red wine, music, and spirited conversations with friends and family about world events. A lover of the outdoors, he embraced sailing, hiking, and simply being in nature. He had a deep affection for animals, especially his beloved labrador, Lilly.
Bob’s presence was unforgettable—his twinkling green eyes, mischievous wink, quick wit, and warm smile endeared him to all who knew him. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Ponsonby, as well as his mother-and-father-in-law, Bette and Larry Steffens.
He leaves behind cherished memories for his wife, Renee’ Ponsonby; his beloved niece, Abigail Steffens of Edwardsville; his nephews, Alexander Steffens of Lincoln, James Ponsonby of New York City, Robert (Morgan) Ponsonby and his great-nephew, Luke Ponsonby of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Jon (Judy) Steffens of Wapella and Jason (Beth) Steffens of Lincoln, as well as his sister-in-law, Claire Ponsonby of Dallas, Texas.
Bob will be honored in a private family service with Military Honors. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him—his humor, kindness, and adventurous nature leaving an enduring mark and serving as a lasting reminder of a life well lived and deeply loved. Fair winds and following seas, sailor, until we meet again.
