Richard Peterson

Richard V Peterson, 77, of Normal, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in hospice care at home with his family.

His graveside service will take place at Noon, Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Algonquin Cemetery, 990 Cary-Algonquin Rd., Algonquin, IL, 60102. A memorial visitation was held from 4:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday, April 17th at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

Dick was born February 5, 1947, in Galesburg, to Howard V and Edith (Christianson) Peterson. He married Nancy Hemmingsen on June 20, 1976, in Elgin. She survives along with their son, Matthew V (Tresha) Peterson, Bloomington; a niece and three great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, John H Peterson and sister-in-law, Darlyn.

Dick was a 1965 graduate of Galesburg HS, earned his B.S. in Education from Illinois State University in1973 and his M.S. in 1979. He served two years in the US Army during the Vietnam War in Vincenza, Italy and Barstow, CA. He taught Industrial Arts/Technology for 28 years at Parkside Junior High, Normal, retiring in 2002.

Dick battled rheumatoid arthritis his entire adult life with a positive attitude. He designed and drew the plans for his home; and he and Nancy pitched in during the construction phase. His hobbies included model trains, woodworking and genealogy research. Dick and Nancy supported ISU Athletics with season tickets for Men’s and Women’s basketball and women’s volleyball for many years.
