Nelda was born March 31, 1937, in Heyworth, IL the daughter of Kenneth Melvin and Madelon Elaine Karr Dagley. She married Edward Terrol “Terry” Powell on March 6, 1959 in Heyworth, IL. He died October 24, 2003.

Surviving is her son Patrick (Lori) Powell, Normal, IL, 3 grandchildren, Caleb Powell, Orange, TX, Spencer (Devin) Powell, Bloomington, IL, Wyatt Powell, Heyworth, IL, 1 great granddaughter, Ryan Ayla Powell, Bloomington, IL, 1 sister, Reta Martens, Heyworth, IL, daughter in-law, Kristi Powell, Orange, TX, special friend, Carolyn Sue Hall, Chicago, IL.

Nelda is preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons, Brian and Kyle Powell, brother, Eldon (Juanita) Dagley, and her brother in-law Denny Powell.

She worked at Ralston Purina beginning in 1956, becoming a stay-at-home Mom after the first of her three sons was born in 1960. During that time, she and her husband Terry were part of the founding members of the ‘new’ Heyworth Christian Church, a membership which spanned their entire lives and was where Nelda’s “second family” lived. After serving as the Church’s secretary, she began a career with State Farm Insurance Company in 1980 and retired after 19 years.

In addition to being a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Nelda touched many lives personally. She was the neighborhood baby-sitter and children’s event planner and field trip chaperone. She taught Sunday School most of her adult life, was a Cub Scouts Den Mother for 5 years, volunteered for several charitable organizations and community events, served as “nurse” to ailing family members and friends, always lending a helping hand for the greater good without question or judgement.

Her smile and sense of humor never faded as she shared her heart with practically everyone she met, making lasting connections with many. While she’ll be sorely missed, our memories will also never fade.

The family would like to personally thank all the amazing and talented people at the Carle BroMenn Cardiology Team, Synergy HomeCare and Carle Home Care / Hospice.
