Leo W. Cuttill Obituary (1918

Leo W. Cuttill, age 106, from Pontiac, formerly of Odell, passed away peacefully at Evenglow Health Center in Pontiac on February 7, 2025, one day before his 107th birthday. Services and burial at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Odell, IL, were held privately. Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home was entrusted with his arrangements. Leo was born on February 8, 1918, in rural Odell to Walter and Hanora (Nolan) Cuttill. He married Mildred Lange on September 15, 1940, in Davenport, IA. She preceded him in death on July 2, 1999. Survivors include his children: William J. Cuttill of Bloomington, IN, Leann Erickson, and Lois (Richard) Shelby, both of Pontiac, IL; seven grandchildren: Michelle, Bradley, Tina, Stacey, Drew, Lee, and Kendra; nine great grandsons, and two great granddaughters. He is also survived by one sister-in-law: Mary Carol (Larry) Soule of Pontiac, IL, and one daughter-in-law: Marilyn (Thomas) Cuttill of Hoffman Estates, IL, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife: Mildred Cuttill, his son: Thomas Cuttill, one son-in-law: Benjamin Erickson, two siblings: Joseph (Margaret) Cuttill and Janet (Raymond) O’Donnell, and two sisters-in-law: Lois (Beryl) Locke and Joan (Robert) Cole. He attended country schools in rural Odell. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre in the 13th combat engineer battalion. He then worked as a skilled, finishing carpenter for 44 years for Opperman Construction in Pontiac, IL. He retired in 1981. Leo was a proud member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, and the Carpenters’ Local Union. Leo enjoyed spending time in his garden, fishing, woodworking, and was an avid White Sox fan. He and his wife enjoyed barn dances in their early years and spending winters in Sebring, FL, in their later years. Leo was devoted to his wife and his family, and they were always central to him. He loved and enjoyed life, was quick-witted, and could put a smile on your face. He will truly be missed by all that knew and loved him. Memorials in Leo’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School, Evenglow Health Center, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
