Karen Dee Reed, 84, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Karen was born on May 21, 1942, the daughter of Thomas Edward Kelley and Martha Jeanette (Spangler) Kelley.
On February 20, 1964, she married the love of her life, David Reed. Together they shared more than sixty-two years of marriage, raising a family, building a home filled with faith and laughter, and creating countless memories that will live on in those who loved them.
Karen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Millikin University and spent many years as a certified teacher and substitute teacher. She was a volunteer for Project READ for many years.
She was a faithful member and deacon of Mount Zion Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi. Her faith quietly shaped the way she lived, always placing family, friends, and service before herself.
Home was Karen's favorite place, spending long summer days canning tomatoes and green beans for the months ahead. She was content with a book or a cup of tea and dark chocolate. Karen appreciated the simple blessings.
Above all else, Karen treasured her family. She was happiest when everyone gathered around the table, laughing, telling stories, and making memories together. Family gatherings were not the same unless her famous pink mold was part of the spread.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, David Reed of Decatur; her children, Patrick Reed, Suzy (John) Dodwell, Kathleen (Justin) Dudley, and Crystal (Rook) Ascenzo; her beloved grandchildren, Chelsea Dodwell, Craig Dodwell, Gryphon Dudley, and Viviana Dudley; along with many extended family members, church friends, and dear friends whose lives were made richer by knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Michael L. Kelley.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Calvert & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion, with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Kelly Cantrell will officiate. A luncheon will follow at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.
Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.
