Joan Mitchell

Joan A. “Mema” Mitchell, 74, of Bloomington, passed away, Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal.

Memorials may be directed to OSF Foundation/OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Born on December 4, 1950, in Clinton, Illinois, to William and Marcile Ann (Johns) Ward, she married Elston E. Mitchell, on May 22, 1974, in Fairfield, Illinois.

Joan is survived by her husband of 51 years, Elston of Bloomington; a son, Todd (Christine) Mitchell of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Reese and Myles Mitchell; four siblings, Susan (Richard) Whitver of Chenoa, William L. (Darlene) Ward of Charleston, SC; Christopher (Tanya) Ward and Mary Kay Ward, both of Clinton; a sister-in-law, Janet Ward, also of Clinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, David Ward.

Joan loved her family fiercely, especially the love of her life, “Papa.” She was the absolute best “Mema” to Reese and Myles, playing a pivotal role in shaping who they are today and who they are yet to become.

A gambling phenom, an avid Cardinals fan, and always quick with her wit—she will be missed deeply.
