Jessie James Ewing, Jr. passed away on August 12, 2022, at Carle Foundation Hospital in the presence of his family.
Jess, or Jimmie to some, was born May 5, 1945, at Burnham City Hospital in Champaign, Illinois, to Jean and Jessie James Ewing, Sr.
Jessie graduated from Mahomet-Seymour High School in 1963. He participated in football, basketball and track. He was a member of the football team that won 33 consecutive games.
Immediately after graduation, Jessie enlisted in the Navy and served two enlistments, before being honorably disabled discharged in 1975.
After his Navy career ended, Jessie went to work for the US Post Office and worked as a Letter Carrier and a Clerk until retiring in May 2007.
Always interested in further education, Jessie encouraged his daughter, Deana, to take sign language classes with him at Parkland Community College in Champaign. In addition, Jessie went to college while working and was able to receive his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University in 1991.
A proud Navy veteran, Jessie belonged to and was involved in actively supporting the American Legion; the Disabled American Veterans; and the American Veterans (AMVETS) serving as 14th District Commander (1993 to 1995). He always had an American flag raised in his yard and inspired others to do so as well.
Jess is survived by his two daughters, Deana Ewing and Constance Musick. Jessie motivated both daughters to pursue higher education. Deana has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Constance has an Associate's degree in Construction Management. Different career paths, but very much sisters at heart. He is also survived by his grandsons Damon, Cameron, and Jason Johnson; his sister, Jeanette McPherson and his brother, Jerry Ewing. In addition, Jessie will be missed always by his devoted beagle and roommate, Tuesday.
Arrangements are being made by Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Homes in Farmer City, Illinois.
