James "Darrell" McGrath Obituary (1932

James Darrell McGrath, 93, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away on November 20, 2025, at John Warner Hospital in Clinton, Illinois. Born on January 22, 1932, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Darrell was the son of Joseph and Gertrude McGrath. Darrell grew up in Michigan, where he spent his early years helping on the family orchard—work that shaped his lifelong appreciation for being outdoors. After moving to Illinois, he built a lengthy career as an appliance sales associate with Montgomery Ward, where he worked until his retirement. In 2004, Darrell married the love of his life, Carol Copelin, who survives him. Together, they enjoyed many joyful years filled with companionship and shared interests. Their marriage was marked by a spirit of togetherness, whether spending time at home or traveling to visit family, explore new places, or simply enjoying the journey side by side. Darrell took pride in maintaining a beautiful yard, often spending hours outdoors tending to it. He and Carol were also active members of a local dance club, where they created cherished memories and lasting friendships through their love of dancing. Darrell’s faith was a source of strength and comfort throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of Springfield First Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he and Carol regularly attended services and participated in church activities. His quiet kindness and willingness to help others made him a valued part of the church community. Darrell is also survived by his two children from his first marriage, Randy McGrath, and Wendy (Eugene) Fross, both of Springfield, IL; and three stepchildren, Brenda (Rob) Lavin of Springfield, IL; Steve Zelmer of Springfield, IL; and Bob Zelmer of Columbia, MO. Also surviving are three grandchildren—Megan McGrath, Luke (Trish) Lavin, and Michael (Paige) Lavin—and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and his five siblings. A memorial service is being planned for late January at Springfield First Seventh-day Adventist Church, 3300 West Jefferson Street, Springfield, Illinois. Darrell will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his dedication to family, his faith, and the warmth he brought to all who knew him.
