Herbie Curtis Obituary (1935

Herbert “Herbie” Curtis, 88 of Bloomington passed away Thursday June 20, 2024, at McLean County Nursing Home in Normal. There will be a funeral for Herbie on Wednesday June 26, 2024, at 11 AM at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington. Reverend Denny Mallory, Reverend Dr. Kevin Summers, Pastor Mark Wallace and Pastor Doug Shaw will officiate. There will be a visitation from 9-11 AM at the Memorial Home. Interment will be in Blooming Grove Cemetery. Herbie was born in Bloomington on October 28, 1935. He married Phyllis Lappin on September 4, 1954, in Bloomington. She preceded him in death on November 28, 2021. He is also preceded in death by two grandchildren, one great grandchild, one sister Nancy Otto, and one brother Bobby Curtis. Surviving are his five children, Jim (Cindy) Curtis of Bloomington, Robbie (Judy) Curtis of Heyworth, Tonda (Denny) Mallory of Bloomington, Dale (Marylea) Curtis of Heyworth, Dennis (James) Curtis of Hendersonville, North Carolina, twelve grandchildren, Brett Bandel, Dawn Bandel, Valerie (Joshua) Deal, Christina Cunningham, Alicia (Mitch) Birky, Brandon (Angie) Curtis, Ben (Michelle) Curtis, Jonah Curtis, Savannah (Jeremiah) Witten, Caleb Johnson, Elizabeth (Andrew) Christensen, and Mariah (Tyler) Cleer, as well as seventeen great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother-in-law Harold Otto, brother and sister-in-law, Sharon and Truman Matheny and many nieces and nephews. Herbie was an Art Teacher and Golf Coach for nearly thirty-five years for District 87. He was a member of Crosspoint Church of God, and formerly attended Crossroads Chapel and the Free Methodist Church. He loved to paint and golf. He was a Gideon, and worked in prison Ministry, and Walk to Emmaus. He loved Jesus and his family. He believed in helping people who needed help. The family would like to say a special thank you to the caring staff at McLean County Nursing Home and Transitions Hospice and Michelle who was like family.
