Gerald Lee Burkey Obituary (1931 - 2024)

Gerald Lee “Jerry” Burkey, 93, of Bloomington, passed away at 3:07 AM Tuesday August 27, 2024, at Martin Health Center in Bloomington. There will be a graveside service on Friday September 13, 2024, at Center Township Cemetery in Flanagan. Pastor Jason Collins will officiate. Jerry was born in Bloomington on August 16, 1931, to Solomon and Mary Irene Gregg Burkey. He married Mary Ann Trent on January 3, 1956, in Greenup, IL. She preceded him in death on August 17, 2019. Two nieces Shirley Ann and Mary Lou, two sisters, Mary Hasselman and Dorothy TeVoert and two brothers John Burkey and Donald Burkey also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister Ruth Alice Oltmanns of Lincoln, and his nieces and nephews Laura (David) Depolo of Carbondale, Paula (Doug) Iversen of Cambridge, IL, Eddie Hasselman of Tonica, IL, Fran TeVoert of Bloomington, and Joe TeVoert of Bloomington. Jerry graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University. He served his country in the United States Army as an X-ray technician. He later worked for thirty years at Owens Corning in Streator and fifteen years at Eureka Company in Bloomington as a Production Planner. He retired in 1996. He was a member of Flanagan Community Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the caring staff at both Westminster Village and Martin Health Center for the excellent care they gave Jerry the last four years. Memorial contributions may be left to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
