Edith I. Smith

Edith I. Smith, 97, of Virden, Illinois, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 11, 2022, surrounded by loving family. She was born March 2, 1925, in Chatham, IL; daughter of Clarence and Daisy (Gaines) Reynolds, Sr. She married Edgar L. Smith on April 10, 1948, in Virden. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2015.

Edith graduated from Virden Community High School in the class of 1944. She was a 66-year member of the Virden United Methodist Church; a founding member of the Virden Red Hat Society; and Chair of the Advisory Board for Virden Assembly #34, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls for over 20 years. Her work history includes Lincoln Ordnance Munitions Plant during World War II, Girard Packing Company, Jonino's Pizza, The Campus, and as a lunch lady in the Virden School Cafeterias for more than 20 years. She loved cardinals - the ones that sit on tree branches and the ones that play baseball in St. Louis, shopping, and folding clothes. Her greatest love was her family and she enjoyed being surrounded by them as much as possible, especially when dancing at family gatherings.

Edith is survived by her son David (Mary Jo) Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; daughters Susan (Robert) McMahan of Thayer, IL, and Sherry (Meda) Smith of Normal, IL; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son Danny Smith, brothers Earl Reynolds, John Reynolds, and Clarence (Kip) Reynolds Jr.; and sisters Oma Castleman and Edna Jarrard.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home, Virden with Reverend Dawn Victor officiating. Burial will follow at Virden Cemetery. Visitations at the funeral home will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Monday, August 15, 2022, and one hour before the funeral services on Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the Virden Red Hat Society or Prairieland Ambulance and will be received by Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Virden who is honored to be caring for Edith's family.
