**Donald Ray Armstrong**
February 9, 1942 – January 16, 2025

Donald Ray Armstrong, 82, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at Martin Health Care. Born in Normal at Brokaw Hospital on February 9, 1942, he was the son of Roy and Alice (Thompson) Armstrong, both of whom preceded him in death.

Don’s love for his family was immeasurable. He married Grethe Bichel on August 30, 1969, and together they shared 55 years of marriage. He is survived by his beloved wife, Grethe; their children, Britta Armstrong-Mitchell (Bruce Mitchell) of Bloomington and Grant (Amy) Armstrong of Edwardsville; his grandchildren, Brennan, Lilli, Peter, and Theo; his brother, Richard (Charlotte) Armstrong of Scottsdale, AZ; and a large extended family of loved ones.

Don spent much of his youth in Arizona, where he graduated from Rincon High School in Tucson, AZ, before returning to Bloomington to raise his family.

Don dedicated over 50 years of his life as an electrician for IBEW Local 197, where he was well-respected by his colleagues and known for his work ethic and commitment to the trade. He also served his community in numerous ways, including as a volunteer firefighter for Bloomington Township, a long-time member and officer of the Trades and Labor Board, and a dedicated volunteer with the Salvation Army. Don's passion for public service extended to his political engagement as well, where he was an elected Democratic Precinct Committeeman.

A man of faith, Don was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church, and he cherished the opportunity to serve his church and community. He also had a heart for children, spending many years as Santa’s helper during the holiday season, bringing joy and laughter to countless families.

In his free time, Don was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears, and he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and working with model trains.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him for his kindness, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community.

A visitation will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 25th from 9:00-11:00 a.m., with a celebration of Don’s life immediately following. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Calvary United Methodist Church.
