Donald "Don" Thorp Obituary (1940

FLANAGAN-Donald “Don” Thorp, 85, of Flanagan, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Hines VA Medical Center in Chicago. His funeral service will be on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Flanagan with Rev. Ben Blobaum officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service at church from 9:00 A.M. – 10:00 A.M. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Flanagan. Memorials may be given to Flanagan American Legion Post 0456. Born to Orvel and Gertrude (Fetzer) Thorp, Don married Kathleen Wiechman on December 30, 1967, in Flanagan. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family, including his wife, Kathleen; son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Eileen; and his cherished granddaughters Tara and Grace. Don was deeply connected to his siblings, who meant everything to him: Glen (Helen) Thorp of Eagle River, WI; Jim (Sally) Thorp of Salina, KS; Larry (Vicki) Thorp of Minonk, IL; Ken (Sonja) Thorp of Phoenix, AZ; and Marsha (Don) Hartzler of Washington, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents of Dana, Il, his brother Bob Thorp of Minonk, IL, and sister-in-law Sally of Salina, KS. Don’s life was marked by service—to his country, his community, and his church. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and gave generously of his time to the Flanagan Village Board, Flanagan Fire Department, St. John’s Lutheran Church Board, Flanagan American Legion Post #456, and as a school bus driver for the Flanagan School District. His contributions were too numerous to list, but his impact was felt by many. No public event in Flanagan ever ran short of Coca-Cola. In his later years, Don found joy in spoiling his granddaughters and watching them grow into young adults. He will be deeply missed for his warmth, humor, and generosity.
