Carl E. "Gene" Dunn

Carl E. “Gene” Dunn, 89, of Nilwood, IL, passed away Friday, May 29, 2026, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Gene was born June 14, 1936, in Virden, IL, the son of Orval and Velma (Claussen) Dunn.

Surviving are his children: Tonya (Ron) Dodge of Ashland IL, Mark (Melissa) Dunn of Springfield, IL, and Cherie Hale of Springfield, IL; his grandchildren: Allie (Bub) Nevitt of Ashland IL, Brandon Dunn of Centralia, IL, Jacob Bowman, Cassidy (Tim) Lindsey of Jacksonville, IL, Amanda Meeks of Jacksonville, IL, and Andy Hale of Springfield, IL; his great-grandchildren, Lylah Nevitt, Nae Lindsey, Traven Lindsey, River Dunn, Kylee Ann, Colton Meeks, and Cashlyn Rose; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tina Dunn, his parents, his brothers, Darrell "Jack" (Doris) Dunn of Girard, IL, and Robert Dunn of Girard, IL; his sister, Virginia Ruth Vandeveer; his two nephews, Mike Vandeveer and Rex Dunn; and his grandson, Joel Hale.

Gene graduated from Virden High School, class of 1955. He worked for UPS for 26 years, retiring for the company. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially camping and fishing. He would take his wife to many different places to camp, including Beaver Dam in Plainview. He also enjoyed grilling out, making ice cream, tending to his garden, and telling jokes. He will always be remembered for his fierce will, sharp wit, and his way of standing firm.

Per Gene’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded by Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Virden, IL. The family will receive friends for visitation from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2026, at Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Virden, IL. A graveside service will follow at Virden Cemetery.
