Richard M. Herr, 96, of Normal died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 28, 2012) at Heritage Health in Bloomington.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2012) at Calvert and Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Trefzger officiating and with military honors by the Bloomington/Normal American Legion honor guard.
Entombment will follow at Park Hill Mausoleum, Bloomington.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2012) at the memorial home.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Bloomington.
He was born May 31, 1915, in Pontiac, to William D. and Lulu Powell Herr. He married Bernadine L. Miller on March 28, 1947, in Normal. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Tom (Patty) Herr, Cincinnati, Ohio; three daughters, Nancy (Greg) King, Olympia, Wash., Deb (Steve) Erickson, Bloomington, and Polly (Chuck) Schott, Normal; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Barker Herr.
He graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, with a degree in economics. He worked for State Farm Insurance Cos., Bloomington, for 44 years, retiring as an underwriting director.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Bloomington, and Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a combat veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in November 1945 at the rank of sergeant.
Richard was a loving husband, dad and granddad who was cherished by his family and will be remembered always.
