Arthur Wolfe

Arthur Walter Wolff  age 91 of  Bloomington, IL passed away at 6:30 AM on  Monday, February 20, 2012 at Heritage Health, Normal, IL. A celebration of life service will be held St. Simon Island, Georgia at a later date. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Midwest Affiliate 530 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, IL 61603-3117.

Cremation services provided by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, IL.

Arthur was born September 7, 1920 in Oak Park, IL the son of Arthur G. and Elsie Weier Wolff.  He married Gene Reynolds on April 5, 1946 in  Westfield, NJ. She passed December 3, 2011.  Surviving are two children: Mary Jane (Harold) Dodd, Martinez, GA; Jeffrey (Lorri) Wolff, Normal, IL; 4 Grandchildren: Scott (Melanie) Dodd, Swannanoa, NC; Jason (Heather) Dodd, Cumming, GA; Sarah (Justin) Pratt, Moline, IL; Mary (Geoffrey) Todd, Naples, FL.  4 Great Grandchildren: Skyler & Jacob Dodd, Swannanoa, NC; Ansley Dodd, Cumming, GA; Nathaniel Pratt, Moline, IL.  1 Sister:  Gladys Pierson, Roswell, GA.  Also surviving numerous nieces & nephews

He is preceded in death by parents.

Mr. Wolff served in the Army Air Corp during WW II he was a tail gunner. He attended Louisiana State University. He worked for Western Electric for 45 years.

Noel Alwes

Noel L. Alwes, age 63 of Bloomington IL passed away at 6:13 PM on  Sunday, February 19, 2012 at her residence.  A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday (Feb. 25, 2012) at Stouts Grove Cemetery, Danvers, IL. Rev. Jan Proeber will officiate. There will be no visitation.

The family suggests memorials be made to CISAR Animal Rescue, Colfax, IL. Cremation services provided by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, IL. Noel was born September 7, 1948 in Hammond, IN the daughter of  Bettee Poole.

Surviving are her surrogate family and special Friends

She is preceded in death by her mother and  sister, Sallie Duffy.

Noel was a Nurse at Marc Center and also worked at Mid Central Community Action both of Bloomington IL. Noel’s loving guidance impacted many lives through her lifetime.

Marjorie Hammerton

Marjorie F. Hammerton, 92, Normal, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 18, 2012) at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.

Memorial service and private inurnment: At a later date.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: First Baptist Church, El Paso. Arrangements are being handled by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.

Survivors: Son, Robert Hammerton, San Bernardino, Calif.; one sister, Carol Rutledge, Normal; and four grandchildren.

Johnny Shankel

Johnny Lee Shankel, 61, rural Heyworth, died at 1:05 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 18, 2012) at his residence.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 22, 2012) at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, with the Rev. Kurt Flora officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carl E. Miller Post 624 American Legion, Heyworth. The family requests casual dress for the services and luncheon. The family will greet friends at a luncheon at the New Horizon Christian Church, 14038 350 North Road, Heyworth, immediately following the funeral service. Cremation will follow the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Randolph Township Fire Department at Heyworth.

Johnny Lee was born Sept. 19, 1950, at Bloomington, the oldest son of George L. “Johnny” and Leta F. Johnson Shankel. He married Carla G. Ramsey on Dec. 25, 1983, at Heyworth. Carla survives.

Also surviving are a son, Terry Lee (Amy) Shankel, West Pueblo, Colo.; two stepsons, John J. (Kelly) Darnell, Heyworth, and George “Jerry” Darnell, Bloomington; and two brothers, Gary D. Shankel and Mark A. (Teri) Shankel, both of Heyworth.

His parents preceded him in death.

He graduated from Heyworth High School in 1968 and later from Bailey Technical School in St. Louis. He formerly worked for Don Stone Ford, Johnny Martin Chevrolet and Norton Rust in Bloomington prior to opening Shankel’s Auto Repair at Heyworth. For the last 11 years he was actively farming in the Heyworth area, retiring in the fall of 2011.

Johnny Lee served in the 1st. BN, 123rd Infantry of the Illinois National Guard from 1969 to  1977.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. John Kugler, Dr. William Ray, Dr. Russell Maas and the Advocate BroMenn Hospice for the compassionate and loving care they provided to Johnny Lee.

William “Bill” Laughlin

William E. “Bill” Laughlin, 84, of Normal, and formerly of Lincoln and Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed away at 1:25 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 18, 2012) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 25, 2012) at First Presbyterian Church, Normal. The family suggests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, Normal. Cremation rights will be accorded.

Bill was born April 13, 1927, in Altoona, Pa., the son of William Harold and Mary Catherine Gleichert Laughlin. He married Patricia Babbitt on April 29, 1950, in Erie, Pa. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Deborah (Steven) Winter, Bloomington, and Robert Laughlin, Normal; four grandchildren, Erin (Chad) Keefe, Normal; Chrissy (Steve) Rustemeyer, Bloomington; Tim (Kelly) Winter, Bloomington; and Scott (Ashley) Winter, Taylorville; and seven great-grandchildren, Will and Laney Keefe; Drew, Tyler and Allie Rustemeyer; and Kenzie and Josie Winter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Sheryl Anne Laughlin; and his foster daughter, Luanne Koester.

Bill graduated in 1949 from Penn State University, State College, Pa., with a degree in chemistry. He worked at PPG Industries, Lincoln, from 1952-1989 and was named PPG Citizen of the Year in 1975. Bill was very involved in the community of Lincoln and was named Lincoln Courier Man of the Year in 1968.

After retirement, Bill, Pat and Rob moved to Hot Springs Village for 15 years. They were heavily involved in their church, Community Players and their close circle of friends. He was a Shriner and a member of Ansar Temple, Springfield.

He was member of the Lincoln Lodge 210 AF & AM, Lincoln. Bill was an accomplished trumpet player and had a beautiful baritone voice. He shared his gift at church and as a hobby over the years. Bill was also an avid sports fan and rooted for the Nittany Lions. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren referred to him fondly as Papoo and he loved watching them grow up. He has influenced many lives and will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Lozelle F. “Bud” Christner

Lozelle F. “Bud” Christner, 87, Danvers, passed away at 11:42 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 15, 2012) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

There will be no service. Cremation services are being provided by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.

Bud was born June 23, 1924, in Mount Sterling, the son of Frank and Margaret Ferguson Christner. He married Dorothy Willing on Oct. 13, 1948, in Peoria. She preceded him in death.

Surviving are two children, Dale (Cameo) Christner, Danvers, and Pam Donovan, Mackinaw; five grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Donovan, Zach (Rachel) Donovan, Sam Donovan, Bridget Christner and Wyatt Christner, all of Danvers; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Zander, Mount Sterling, and Norma Rahn, Aurora.

He was preceded in death by six siblings.

He served in the 267th Army Air Forces during World War II as crew chief on B24 bombers and obtained the rank of sergeant. He retired from Keystone Steel & Wire in 1976.

Norman H. Nelson

Norman H. Nelson, 87, of Bloomington passed away at 2:12 p.m. Feb. 12, 2012, at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal.

Norm, as his friends and family called him, was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Chicago. He was the son of Helmer and Blanche Nelson of Sweden and Chapin respectively. Norm married the love of his life, Dagney G. Nelson, on May 3, 1947, in Chicago. Norm and Dag were childhood friends who became reacquainted upon his return home as an officer in the Navy after World War II. Dag preceded him in death on May 4, 2011, a day after celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are two children, Pamela Nelson, Bloomington, and Scott (Debbie) Nelson, Marietta, Ga.; and a granddaughter, Jenny (Lewis) Nelson-Cosby, Knoxville, Tenn. His sister, June Smith, Albany, Mo., also survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Ashley Nelson, Marietta, Ga.; and his wife, Dagney.

Norm enlisted in the Navy’s Midshipmen’s School immediately after high school. While in the program he studied at Notre Dame and Dartmouth. After the war he completed his degree at Northwestern University and in 1946 he joined Country Life Insurance Company in Chicago as an associate actuary. The company eventually relocated to Bloomington in 1961 as part of the Illinois Agricultural Association (IAA). After 43 years of service, he retired in 1989 from the Country Companies. During this time he acted as vice president and general manager of Country Capital Management Company; vice president of Vehicle Leasing; and vice president of Brokerage Services, as well as a member of the Country Companies Management Committee.

Norm was active in community affairs and a believer that “you get out of a community what you put back into it, and the same is true for life.” While he and the family were living in Park Forest, he was president of the School Board and PTA chairman. He also served as the general chairman and co-chairman of the McLean County United Way in 1978, a board member of the Association of Commerce and Industry of McLean County, and a member of Illinois Wesleyan Associates. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason in Bloomington’s Blue Lodge 43 and Consistory, and a member of Peoria’s Mohammed Shriners.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bloomington, where memorials may be addressed. The family is having a memorial service for both he and his wife, Dagney, on Saturday with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be emailed to www.

Norm was a true gentleman and a man of integrity, an incredibly loving, empathetic, caring husband and father whose unconditional love was beyond measure. He was liked by all and his sweetness, sense of humor and good nature will be affectionately remembered and always cherished. Beulah M. Miller

Beulah M. Miller, 93, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 14, 2012) at Martin Health Center, Bloomington. Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday (Feb. 24, 2012) at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. The Rev. Keith Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Bloomington.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday (Feb. 24, 2012) at the funeral home.  The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or Martin Health Care Center, Bloomington.

She was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Bloomington, the daughter of Harry A. and Rachel L. Hindenburg Miller.  Survivors include two nieces, Jacqueline (George) Bottrell, Normal, and Linda Miller, Pompano Beach, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Eloise Miller, Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Eugene Miller; and a niece, JoAnne Miller.

Beulah was a graduate of Brown’s Business College. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomington. She was a member of Bloomington Del Phi Chapter and a former member of McLean County Gardeners. Beulah had worked for Corn Belt Electric for 44 years, retiring in 1983.

William T. Maitland, Sr.

William T. Maitland Sr., 73, Bloomington died at 1:36 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 16, 2012) at Bloomington Rehabilitation Center, Bloomington.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday (Feb. 20, 2012) at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, with Rev. Dr. Don Crittenden officiating.  Visitation will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Monday (Feb. 20, 2012) at the memorial home. Masonic Rites will be accorded by Bloomington Lodge #43 A.F. & A.M.   Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington.  Memorials may be made in Bill’s name to Second Presbyterian Church, Shiner’s Children’s Hospital or Bloomington Rehabilitation Center.

Bill was born on April 26, 1938 in Normal a son of Elsa Raisbeck Maitland and John W. Maitland Sr.  He married Joyce A. Hutchinson in 1959 – she survives.

Survivors include 2 sons William T. Maitland Jr. of Colorado,  and Kevin R. (Dede) Maitland of Belleville, IL;  daughter : Shelly A. (Jim) Cole of Bloomington, IL , 10 grand children.  2 Brothers:  John (Joanne) Maitland, Jr. of Bloomington, IL; Jim (Melanie) Maitland of Millersville, MD.  Sister:  Lucya (Stephen) Mongelluzzo of Mundelein, IL.   Bill was preceded in death by his parents and twin granddaughters.

He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church (choir and Deacon).  A 47 year member of Bloomington Lodge #43, a member of the Bloomington Consistory, Mohammed Shrine and Tin Lizzie’s Patrol (past president).  Past member of the Kiwanis Club, Bloomington Elks Club and McLean County Children’s Health Care Council board member.  He owned and operated Maitland Heating and Cooling for 30 years.

Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and will be missed by all.  The family would like to thank the staff and employees of Bloomington Rehabilitation Center and OSF Hospice for their loving care.

Pauline Meyer

Pauline Cora Meyer, 94, of Normal went to be with her Lord at 11:55 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 9, 2012) at Heritage Health, Normal.

Her service will be 10 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 16, 2012) at Cross Pointe Church of God, Bloomington, with the Rev. David Lloyd officiating. Interment will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 15, 2012) at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. The family suggests memorials be made to Cross Pointe Church of God.

Pauline Cora Crutcher was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Bloomington, the daughter of David Milton Crutcher and Hattie Beatrice Cowan. She married Adrian Vincent Meyer on April 21, 1938, in Bloomington. He died Aug. 26, 1991.

Surviving are three children, Sharon (Don) Mitten, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Kerry (Cheri) Meyer, Bloomington; and Gregory (Marsha) Meyer, Normal; daughter-in-law Caryol Meyer, Noblesville, Ind.; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Mitten, Eric Todd Mitten, Mark (Mary) Mitten, Seth (Kathy) Mitten, Shane (Stephanie) Meyer, Robin (Tom) Chiavetta, Matthew (Melanie) Meyer, Joshua (Erin) Meyer, Christopher Meyer and Brandon Meyer; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Walt Bittner; and sister-in-law, Dolores Crutcher.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; a son, the Rev. Richard E. Meyer; brothers, Henry, Joseph, Lewis, Ivan, Ralph and David Jr.; sisters, Violette and Eva; and her twin sister, Irene; and two great-grandchildren.

Before marrying, she ran the elevator at the First National Bank Building in Bloomington. Determined to finish school, she returned to Bloomington High School where she graduated in 1938.

Pauline’s joy from a very early age was singing. She and her twin sister, Irene, were known as “Uncle Dave’s Twins” as they sang at barn dances and other events. Pauline took part in trios, choir or leading music at church for most of her life. Even through the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s she maintained her beautiful voice and recollection of hymns.

Pauline passed along a wonderful heritage of faith in the Lord Jesus to her children. Because of her love and passion for serving Him, she took an active role in several aspects of church such as the Women’s Missionary Society, Sunday school, the visitation ministry for shut-ins and the music program. She had the gift of hospitality, making everyone feel welcome in her home.

Hobbies included creating clothes for dolls to be donated (Dress-a-Doll program), genealogy, gardening, sewing, reading and crocheting.
